Governors

The Role of our Governing Board

Our St Saviour's Roman Catholic Primary School Governing Board provides strategic leadership and accountability for the school. It is a team of dedicated and hard-working volunteers and staff members who help with the strategic vision of the school.

Our main functions are to;

  • To provide a strategic overview that ensures the pupils learn most effectively and achieve the highest standards
  • To act as a “critical friend” of the school by providing the Headteacher and staff with support, advice and information. To monitor and evaluate the school’s effectiveness and promote the interests of the school and pupils.
  • To ensure accountability. We are accountable to parents, pupils, the community, the Archbishop, the Local Authority and Ofsted

We are also responsible for many important decisions in the running of the school. These include:

  • Appointing the Headteacher and Deputy Headteachers. Governors are also involved in the appointment of teaching staff as appropriate.
  • Agreeing the aims of the school curriculum and ensuring the national curriculum is implemented
  • Determining how the school’s budget is to be used each year
  • Dealing with official complaints and exclusions

Our Governors

Our governing body includes:

  • Headteacher;
  • 1 Elected Staff Governor;
  • 8 Foundation Governors;
  • 1 Governor nominated by the local authority;
  • 2 Elected Parent Governors; and
  • 1 Co-opted Governor

The staff governor is elected by the staff and normally serves for 4 years.

The parent governors are elected to serve the Governing Board by parents of the school and normally serve for 4 years.

Parent governors are pleased to hear about views and ideas and can be contacted in writing via the school office.

The Foundation governors are appointed by the Diocese to serve the Governing Board of the school and normally serve for 4 years.

The co-opted governors are invited onto the Governing Board, by the Governing Board, to add areas of expertise and to represent the local community. We use a robust a skills audit to ascertain the requirements and expertise required by the governing board.

The governors are kept well informed about our School through a wide variety of information systems from the Schools’ own reporting to published data from the Department for Education (DfE) and other external bodies.

Regular meetings enable governors to both support and challenge the leadership of the school. Governors keep in regular contact with the leadership of our School and regularly visit the School and also attend a range of School functions and events.

You can contact the governing body by writing to the Chair of Governors via the School Office or by email.

Full governing body meetings are held four times a year, two in the autumn and one in the spring and summer terms. The agenda for the meetings includes items from the Local Authority, the Diocese, directives and initiatives from the Government and school-based concerns.

Parents and carers are welcome to attend our Governing Body meetings as observers. Please let us know if you wish to attend so that we know to expect you and can arrange seating.

The governing body has a Resources sub-committee, which meets three times a year. The Pay and Admissions committees meet annually, a Disciplinary Panel will be formed and meet when required.
